We provide comprehensive outpatient neuropsychological evaluation services for individuals in infancy through older adulthood. Neuropsychological evaluations are useful when developmental, cognitive, educational, behavioral, social and/or emotional issues are interfering with an individual’s success in day-to-day functioning. Our staff of clinical neuropsychologists have specialized training in brain-behavior relationships, and have worked in a variety of centers of excellence, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Stanford, Brown, UCSD, Duke, and Northwestern. Our team has expertise in working with various populations, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric clients.
Our goal is to provide our clients with an in-depth understanding of his/her cognitive, academic, and emotional strengths and weaknesses, which lead us to develop individually tailored treatment and intervention plans. An evaluation will typically include a clinical interview, review of historical records, and formal psychological/ neuropsychological testing. Formal testing may include measures of the following:
- Academic/pre-academic achievement
- Adaptive skills
- Attention/concentration
- Executive functions (planning, organization, self monitoring)
- Behavior
- Intellectual functioning
- Language and language-related processes
- Learning and memory
- Nonverbal/visual processing
- Motor skills
- Personality and social-emotional functioning
Our neuropsychological evaluations:
- assist with medical, psychiatric, or psychological diagnosis
- track improvement or decline in one’s neuropsychological functioning over time
- evaluate effects of medical treatments and behavioral interventions
- provide specific recommendations for treatment and intervention planning
Pediatric Specialization
Our team includes clinicians who have completed formalized specialty training in the areas of school psychology and pediatric neuropsychology, and we employ knowledge of the developing brain and its relationship to cognition and behavior in the evaluation of and treatment planning for children and adolescents. Our pediatric evaluations are geared towards identifying a child's unique profile of strengths, weaknesses and learning style to assist with development of comprehensive school, home, and therapeutic based interventions and recommendations. Our team is available to provide consultation with school personnel, parents and educational advocates regarding appropriate educational interventions and placement decisions based on the child’s neuropsychological profile or therapeutic goals.
Adult Specialization
Our team also includes clinicians whose training specialized in medical and neuropsychiatric disorders that adversely affect cognition, vocational skills, and independent living ability in adults. Adult neuropsychological evaluations may assist with diagnosis, however, as with pediatric evaluations, the focus is on determining an individual’s specific pattern of strengths and weaknesses to tailor appropriate interventions to be implemented in the home, work or school setting, or alternative residence. Adult evaluations may also assist with various questions of competency/ independence, such as one’s ability to live alone or to continue with one’s career choice. In conjunction with a referring/treating physician, our clinicians usually provide psychoeducational support to families learning of a new diagnosis or assist with adjusting expectations based on an existing diagnosis.
Geriatric Specialization
Our team also includes clinicians who have completed formalized specialty training in the areas of dementia, stroke, movement disorders, geropsychiatry, and multiple medical illnesses. Our geriatric evaluations include comprehensive review of medical records, social, educational, and occupational history, current symptoms, and adaptive and dysfunctional behaviors. The evaluations are designed to identify patterns of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, improve diagnostic accuracy, and inform treatment and rehabilitation plans. The overriding goal of the assessment is to assist in maximizing functioning in older adults. Our team works closely with medical providers, rehabilitation teams, the client and his or her caregivers to accomplish this goal.
Our team of experts is also available for brief consultations, workshops/in-services, and legal/expert testimony.
